High-Way 2 - #19: Thinking Outside of The Box
Supplies Needed: A box large enough to put a
chair/stool inside (if you can't locate a box big
enough, you can "box in" a student by putting a
masking tape square on the floor)
Objective: To help students realize that there are
opportunities to risk every day
1) (Write the following on the board before
beginning: )
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I...
I took the one less traveled by,
and that has made all the difference.
- Robert Frost
2) (Read aloud slowly or paraphrase: )
The box in the middle of the room today is for those
who are having trouble thinking "outside the box."
For those who are willing to risk it, you may come
forward and tell me a number from 1 to 20 (see
list below). Once I give you your task, you will
have 30 seconds to say aloud five different ways
to accomplish your task. If you can think of at
least five within that time, you will receive your
reward (a badge, 5 jelly beans, etc). If you
don't, you will have to sit in the box until the
next person gets "boxed in." No hints from the group
or the person will go right to the box!
Who wants to be our timer?
Who's ready to take a risk and "think outside the
box"?
1) To eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
2) To read a book
3) To impress a girl/guy
4) To spell your name
5) To end an argument
6) To get to school
7) To help yourself wake up on time
8) To remember where you left your shoes
9) To earn money
10) To get better grades
11) To cook an egg
12) To draw a tree
13) To say "Thank you"
14) To get dressed
15) To end up in the principal's office
16) To study for a test
17) To get to Washington D.C.
18) To learn Spanish
19) To make a new friend
20) To change the world
3) (When you're finished, discuss: )
- Who came up with really creative answers?
- How well did we stretch each other? For example,
for "How to end up in the principal's office," did
it occur to you that you could give answers like
these?
· Be honored as the most improved student in your
class
· Stop by just to say "thanks"
· Go to school, get your masters and end up as a
principal
- Did you get any ideas that you might use? If
so, what?
- Why is it so important to try new things and not
get into a rut?
