Renaissance:
The Fit with 8 to Great

How 8 to Great Works Hand in Hand with the Renaissance Program

The rewards and recognition of the Renaissance Program are great fit for 8 to Great! Recognition can be given for each of the 8 High-Ways of 8 to Great. For example:

High-Way 1: Get the Picture is about having a dream and envisioning it. You could:

1) Have a Dream Inner-View assembly where some of the folks who haven't received awards come up and get "interviewed" as though their dream (written on a card, put in an envelope and placed in a box in your main office) had already come true.

"So, tell us, Chad, how does it feel now that you're a paratrooper? What the most exciting thing about it?"

"Congratulations, Juanita, you just received the Outstanding Young Vocalist award. what does that mean to you?"

You select students at random (or the ones doing the poorest) to align with their highest potential. It's very powerful. (This is Activity 19 from Handbook #1 of 8 to Great curriculum).

OR 2) You give out DREAM DIPLOMAS for watching movies!. The goal here is to get images into the students' minds of people overcoming tremendous odds to accomplish their goals. You know how hard many of your students have it at home. You challenge the students and staff to earn Dream Diplomas.

In After-School or Saturday Detentions you watch these movies so they can earn points towards their diploma. (Even if they don't see the whole movie, their interest is piqued!)

How do they prove they've seen 10 of the movies below? Someone (could even be a parent) quizzes them. (We have quiz questions if you need them.) As they get the DREAM DIPLOMA, they have to say their FAVORITE movie of the 10 and what they learned. (Have your handkerchief ready!)

Dream Diploma Movie Options (must be from this list of true story films):

Antwone Fisher Bend It Like Beckham
Chariots of Fire   Rudy
Cool Runnings   Glory Road
Music of the Heart  October Sky
Take the Lead  My Life (check the rating)
Miracle Sea Biscuit
Pursuit of Happyness   We Are Marshall
Diary of Anne Frank Invincible
The Rookie Coach Carter
Amazing Grace  Hoosiers
Cinderella Man  Freedom Writers
Radio  Road to Glory
Remember the Titans

It's like having a motivational speaker coaching them every week, except LOTS cheaper!

As Einstein reminded us, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
